I. Devotionals

40 Days of Lent 2007 by Jonathon Jensen
$3.00, http://www.forwardmovement.org/showbook.cfm?prodid=1875

Comparing the discipline of Lent to the burning of the prairie, Jonathon Jensen offers guidance for purifying the soul in our 2007 booklet of Lent meditations. "The prairie is burned because we care about it and want it to continue to flourish. It is the only one we have. A soul needs proper tending to flourish, too. Removing sins gives our properly prepared soul a chance to flourish even in the most extreme conditions."

These reflections serve as a starting place for entering into the disciplines of Lent where the "sins that choke out new life are removed." As Jensen writes of the encounters that have shaped his ministry and life as rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in the college town of Lawrence, Kansas, he provides a meditative path through the daily struggles, pains, and questions we encounter on the path to the redemption that is Easter Day.

A Time to Turn: Anglican Readings for Lent and Easter Week
by Christopher L. Webber

"Lent is above all a time of turning. Lent provides us with a time in which we can break away from the old, familiar, and deadly patterns we so easily fall into and open ourselves to the possibility of something new. Lent is a time to turn." --from the Introduction

For centuries Lent has been a season when Christians stop and take stock of their lives. This stocktaking comes in many forms. During Lent we revisit the story of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection, and in reading them anew, focus on our own sinfulness and the need to repent. We set aside luxuries and make sure that other have what they need. A Time to Turn provides readings for each day of Lent, Holy Week, and the first week of Easter, and explores these themes using the best sermons, books, poems, and hymns of Anglican writers throughout the centuries. Readings, carefully selected, from Christina Rossetti, John Donne, Philips Brooks, John Keble, Thomas Traherne, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and many others, make A Time to Turn a thoughtful companion for the season.

"Blessed is She: Living Lent with Mary" from Morehouse Publishing, by Tim Perry, 96
pages, paperback, c. 2007, $10.95

[Source: Morehouse Publishing] -- Everyone is happy to see Mary in the crèche at
Christmastime, but by the time the Magi head back East after the Feast of the Epiphany,
Christians of many traditions are often ready to place Mary to the side too. But Timothy
Perry presents a Mary who belongs in Lent as much as in Advent, showing what it means to die
and live with the crucified and risen Jesus.

Drawing primarily from the Gospel of Luke, this lovely book of spiritual reflections reveals
a Lenten Mary who teaches us about being disciples. The result is a complex, inviting, strong
character -- a disciple to be emulated by all Christians, especially during this holy season.
With a study for each week of Lent, along with questions to ponder, this is a
thought-provoking volume for private use or parish study.

"Pilgrim Road: A Benedictine Journey through Lent" from Morehouse Publishing, by
Albert Holtz, O.S.B., 178 pages, paperback, c. 2006, $10.95

[Source: Morehouse Publishing] -- In the view of St. Benedict of Nursia, the Lenten journey
is an inner pilgrimage with Christ into the deepest parts of ourselves, to be marked not so
much by external observances such as fasting and self-denial as by a deepening of our
relationship with God.

Benedictine monk Albert Holtz develops that journey theme through meditations written during
a fifteen-country pilgrimage during a sabbatical year. At the heart of each reflection is the
lesson it teaches about our inner spiritual journey.

By applying Benedict's monastic wisdom to the everyday concerns and aspirations of modern
Christians, Pilgrim Road helps contemporary spiritual seekers keep Lent as a positive,
meaningful, and fruitful experience.

"In the Company of Christ: A Pilgrimage Through Holy Week" from Church Publishing,
Inc., by Benedicta Ward, 84 pages, paperback, c. 2005, $12

[Source: Church Publishing, Inc.] -- With In the Company Christ, Sister Benedicta Ward,
Benedictine nun and church historian, guides us through the history of Christian procession.
Through the practice of pilgrimage we live the resurrection, and join a wide Christian
community. Pilgrimage is a way into the eternal Jerusalem, a way into the Gospel. Over
centuries of practice, the rituals and traditions of pilgrimage have evolved.

Using the Holy Days of Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter as her signposts, Sr. Ward takes
us through time. Among our stops is ancient Palestine, where we explore the writings of the
4th Spanish nun, Egeria. Leaving Jerusalem, we cross time and arrive in the rituals of
medieval English monasticism. Finally, we end where we began, with a journey into the
Trinity.

By taking part in this historical procession, we find a clear line of continuity between
ancient and medieval times, and our own modernity. In the Company of Christ is a journey for
an individual or for a parish, to be taken during Lent or any time of the church year.

Benedicta Ward is a well-known English author and "reader" (at Oxford) on the early Church.
Her writings have bridged the genres of academic and spiritual resources. She is the author
of The Desert Fathers: Sayings of the Early Christian Monks, and numerous books on Bede,
including The Venerable Bede (Outstanding Christian Thinkers Series), and The Wisdom of the
Desert Fathers.

Alan Jones, 195 pages, paperback, c. 1999, $14.95

wholeness, a search for home that is in God. In this classic work on contemporary spiritual

and biblical texts as illustrations, he explores the search for light and love, repentance,
and forgiveness in the context of the Passion and Easter stories.

questions at the end of each chapter. Passion for Pilgrimage is also provocative reading for

"We Preach the Christ Crucified" from Church Publishing, Inc., by Kenneth Leech,
102 pages, paperback, c. 1994, 2005, $12

[Source: Church Publishing, Inc.] -- Witnessing to the cross of Christ stands at the very
heart of Christian spirituality, and without it our faith makes no sense. In this tenth
anniversary edition of Kenneth Leech's classic Lenten book, We Preach Christ Crucified, he
draws from his own prayer, study of the Bible, and encounters with others to offer a rich
account of the resurrection for today. The themes of suffering and healing, justice and
compassion, and Christ's dying and rising all come together in a compelling theology of
discipleship and ministry.

With six short chapters and hymns and poetry drawn from the Anglican spiritual tradition, We
Preach Christ Crucified is an excellent resource for study groups who want to enter more
deeply into the meaning of Christian discipleship faith and prayer and study New Testament
texts that draw on the Resurrection and themes of Jesus' passion.
